Take a Trip to the Past with a Weekend in Flint & Genesee

You’ll start off with a great meal to energize you for a fun night ahead. Stop in to Mario’s Restaurant & Pizzeria in Flint, where you can get your family a delicious pizza and breadsticks with a round of drinks to wash it all down. Mario’s also has great appetizers, like fried veggies or pizza sticks, as well as soups and salads.

From Mario’s, you’ll head across the street to the US 23 Drive-In Theater for an evening of movies. US 23 offers double features on one of three screens, allowing families to choose which double feature best suits them as they park and prepare for the fun. The US 23 Drive-In is one of the surviving outdoor theaters in the state and is a throwback to a time when movie-going and car culture collided. At the movies, you can load up on snacks at the snack bar, get snuggled into the car or in a lawn chair, and either tune in on a radio or with the provided speakers. Nothing says spring and summer like a night at the drive-in.

After the movies, head back to your hotel to talk about the movies you saw and get some rest before morning comes. The Hill Road corridor in Mundy Township offers several hotel options, including the Best Western Plus Flint Airport Inn, Hampton Inn & Suites Flint/Grand Blanc, and Hyatt Place Flint, among other nearby choices.

After a good night’s rest, there’s nothing like a hearty breakfast, so head over to The Pig and The Hen for a delicious, down-home meal with flair. The Pig and The Hen offers favorites like omelets, crepes, French toast, waffles, and much more. If you are looking for diner food, Gillie’s Coney Island is also near your next destination. Gillie’s has personality to spare and offers large portions of breakfast classics that will start the day on the best foot.

A trip to Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad is a journey through time that takes visitors back to small-town life in the 1800s with an accurate recreation of the era. Wander down the main street, stop into the ice cream shop, the opera house for a show, the mercantile for a souvenir, or go to any of the trades buildings to see how things were done over a hundred years earlier. While there, be sure to take a ride on their rebuilt historic train and enjoy a leisurely ride through the town and the wilderness that surrounds it.

As you close out your stay, you’ll want to get something to eat before you head home. Stop by the Flushing A for one last throwback as this fast-food restaurant is reminiscent of one from the 1950s, even down to their drive-in car service. And what better way to end a great weekend than getting ice cream down the street at Roaring 20’s Ice Cream Parlour

History is alive and well in Flint & Genesee. Plan your trip and see for yourself.
