Snowshoes have a long history and have been used by many different cultures for thousands of years. In America, Indigenous people developed the most advanced and diverse snowshoes before the 20th century, and snowshoes were adopted by Europeans during early colonialism. The tool has been used to travel safely on foot on wintery terrain for many years and continues to be a tool now for those who enjoy exploring nature.
These days, especially in states that experience winter weather such as Michigan, snowshoeing is a great winter activity for nature lovers. Best used in conditions where there are eight or more inches of snow, snowshoes are used to climb and ascend steep slopes making it perfect for hiking enthusiasts.
Snowshoeing is also great for beginners as there is no experience necessary for this winter sport. The sport is a great way to get in exercise during the winter months when outdoor activities are limited.
You can snowshoe anywhere that is open to the public however in Flint & Genesee there are some great places to strap on your snowshoes and see the winter sites.
