With the falling temperatures comes the smell of burning leaves, thoughts of warm clothes, and hot drinks. Fall is here, and the fun’s just starting. Flint & Genesee boasts several farms that offer corn mazes and other fall fun, meaning there’s plenty to plan for and even more to do.

Fall begins in earnest at Flushing Farms on Aug. 29, when they open their corn mazes and all their attractions to friends and families looking for some non-scary fun. In its eighth year, the farm has become a tradition for people in the area. For the cost of admission, guests can brave the corn mazes, check out the petting zoo, take a ride on a hay wagon, go on the barrel rides, grab a free donut and cider, and, as the temperatures dip, take a seat by the fire to warm up. For kids, there are straw bales to climb and bounce houses just for them. For those who stay for a while, a concession stand is available, selling drinks and treats to keep you fueled for a fun time. Flushing Farms also sells pumpkins in the heart of fall, and there are still plenty of flowers available in their fields for purchase before the frost hits.

Mazes at the Flushing Township farm are created by Precision Mazes, a business that plots mazes for farms and other businesses. The company creates a design that Flushing Farms approves, then they map out each maze and use their specialized equipment to carve it. Afterward, workers at the farm keep the paths clear and ready for guests to explore.

“A lot of places have a separate price for everything, but here it’s all one price,” says Manager, Sandy Seibt.

Those who take on the mazes, with three levels of difficulty, can buy a map for $1 to help guide them and provide them with items to find along the way. Even seasoned veterans will have a challenge ahead of them as the pattern changes yearly.

For more corn maze fun, you can head to Spooky Trails in Swartz Creek, closer to Halloween, where they have a family-friendly corn maze and a haunted corn maze at night, among other scary delights. Porter’s Orchard in Goodrich offers hayrides on the weekend, as well as corn mazes and pumpkin picking. There are two mazes on hand, one for children and another for those seeking a more challenging experience. Spicer Orchards of Fenton is another spot you’ll want to check out during the fall. The orchard hosts many special events throughout the season, with the corn maze being a highlight. The maze is open throughout September and October, and while there, kids can explore the playground, visit the farm animals, and the family can take a wagon ride. If families are looking for more fun, they can head to Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad for Ghosts & Goodies, where kids can navigate a hay maze, trick-or-treat, attend a Halloween magic show, or enjoy other Halloween activities.
