The Flint & Genesee region has a deep and rich history. Most of us are at least casually familiar with the history of Flint as one of the birthplaces of the automobile and the people that built that legacy but there is much more to the story of this area than that. History is all around us and there are several places you can go to learn about it.

Flint isn’t home to just car history, as there is a wealth of historical spaces and information about the area. You can head to Flint’s Applewood Estate to learn about the Mott family and to see the gorgeous estates where they once lived, still maintained today as it once was. Applewood is especially fun for the whole family during the summer or holidays when there are planned events and displays.

In Davison they have the Davison Historical Society & Museum which gathers artifacts and information about the founding of Davison and its early businesses and even boasts a mammoth bone, reminding everyone that history beyond humans is all around us also.

Clio offers the Clio Area Historical Depot Museum, which brings together the history of the city in one place. With newspapers from the past, the history of the railroad that built the town’s identity, and the story of Clio before it became the city it is today, this is a perfect way to learn more about this northern Genesee County city.

The A.J. Phillips Fenton Museum embraces the history of the city as well as the people who lived there. With a substantial genealogy room and cemetery records of the entire county. As well as everything else at the museum there is also a replica of the office of A.J. Phillips, a local industrialist who was a cornerstone for the city. The museum offers artifacts from different eras of Fenton history as well as newspapers and is a fascinating trip through time. Fenton also boasts the Podunk House and Museum, which is housed in the second oldest house in Genesee County and features more artifacts of the history of this area.

Flushing boasts the Flushing Area Historical Society & Museum, which preserves and collects history about the area. Along with their standing collection they offer regular lectures and presentations about the region’s history at the Flushing depot.

In Grand Blanc, you will find the Heritage Museum in a former church building offering two floors of historical exhibits and displays. The museum boasts several working instruments from the late 19th century and early 20th century, among these a player piano. There is also a reed organ from 1875 and the parlor of the building features two early recorded music machines.

Linden’s historical museum is located in the Linden Mill, a former mill that now houses the local library on the first floor and the museum on the second floor. The museum features pieces of Linden’s history and sits on the banks of the Shiawassee River.

Finally, it is in Montrose where you can find the Montrose Historical and Telephone Pioneer Museum. The two museums share one building and tell both the story of the Montrose area as well as the history of the telephone as well and there are exhibits within that recreate what past eras looked like.

For history aficionados, Flint & Genesee is full of opportunities to learn more about our area and the people who made it what it is.
