Flint & Genesee has a rich tradition of theater that is still thriving. From large-scale touring productions to smaller, local musicals put on in small venues, it’s clear that theater is alive and well and just waiting to be experienced.

Located in a former Flint church, The New McCree Theater has been giving voice to the voiceless for nineteen seasons featuring concerts, films, and especially theatrical productions that deal with themes of race and identity. Their mission is "To tell the African American Story in the African American voice."

The Flint Community Players (FCP) on Ballenger Highway has become a staple of independent theater since 1928. Presenting everything from musicals to plays, the FCP embraces its place as an alternative theater. It brings the community fun, challenging, and heart-rending productions that feature local actors and behind-the-scenes talent.

Clio Cast & Crew, Inc. is a community theater that has been around for over 45 years bringing entertainment for the entire family.  Located in their own building on Clio Road, you can find a mix of drama, comedy, who-done-it, and musicals.

Local schools can be a hotbed of talent and passion for the theater and Davison’s The Actors Playhouse by DCER is no different. The theater does traditional performances, such as their upcoming Beauty and the Beast, but also brings theater to the community via their occasional live readings on the trails at For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum. Facilitated by the Davison Community Education Enrichment & Recreation, this is a community theater with young people just discovering their love of performing and writing and is worth seeking out. Many of Flint & Genesee’s school districts offer theater programs and put on well-known plays and musicals during the year that you will want to check out as well.

Flint’s Dark Room Productions is all about bringing theater from the fringes to everyone. Considering themselves a ‘pop-up theater’, they put shows on at the Flint Local 432 that range from bizarre to silly. Their most recent production was Lovesick – The Cat Allergy Musical, which ended their 2023 season. If you want theater with a slice of strange, then look no further.

The FIM Flint Repertory Theatre mixes classic theater productions with new voices, even opening things up for their New Works Festival where contemporary composers and playwrights take the spotlight. The Flint Rep is a big theater with larger productions while maintaining their connections to Flint & Genesee and its many creative people.

The University of Michigan-Flint Theatre & Dance is where students put what they are learning to practice. Whether in dance or theater productions you will be able to see some of the next generation of their respective industries learning to do what they love professionally.

Finally, the Shop Floor Theatre Company was founded in 2012 in Flint and allows the public to tell their personal stories. They are focusing on local and regional stories and uplifting the many talented performers in Flint & Genesee. This non-profit arts organization has helped young people find their voices and deal with their trauma. They do not have any upcoming scheduled shows but are well worth keeping an eye on.

At its heart theater connects us through laughter, tears, and song, and its vibrancy reminds us of the fragile splendor of humanity. The many options in Flint & Genesee offer something different and unique from one another. All are worth your time and money as you revel in all that it is to be and to feel.
