When it comes to barbecue, everyone has their own preference. Do you prefer your barbecue heavily sauced or dry rubbed? Do you like a certain region’s style of barbecue? Do you prefer pork to beef or maybe chicken? There are so many varieties of the beloved summer staple that sometimes the hardest thing to do is narrow down what sides to go with your meal. If you have a love for barbecue, whatever your taste may be, then Flint and Flint Township are great places to start in Genesee County.

Downtown Flint’s is a great place for great barbecue. Try their premium hand-sliced prime brisket or their chopped pork plate that is smoked for over 12 hours with their special rub. You can have both of those as a sandwich as well and perhaps pair them with some Smokehouse mac & cheese to finish things off.

Operated out of the Flint Farmers’ Market, Charlie’s Smokin’ Bar-B-Q has been serving their hickory smoked meats since 2004 and they offer takeout or catering. Charlie’s menu features ribs, chicken, pulled pork, brisket, and classic sides like baked beans, green beans, Coleslaw, and mac & cheese.

Big Baby BBQ & Fish in Flint offers not only great barbecue but, as their name says, fish as well. Here you’ll find everything from ribs by the slab to tips, chicken, and buffalo, and even wings. If you prefer seafood they serve frog legs, perch, catfish, cod, and more. Big Baby also offers sandwiches and a slew of sides like string beans, okra, beans, potato salad, and collard greens.

The Barbecue House food truck in Flint has just what you need to make every dinner amazing. The Barbecue House offers patrons wings, ribs, and tips as well as pulled pork, hamburgers, and hot dogs. With a side of creamy mac and cheese to go with everything there’s a reason their reviews talk about what a value their delicious meals are.

Smoke Rattle & Roll can be found at the University of Michigan-Pavilion, which offers a walk-up restaurant, a popular food truck, and catering to meet your BBQ needs. With a mix of fusion and traditional barbecue styles, they offer something unique in the area that has their fans returning again and again for pulled pork street nachos, nachos with brisket, Brussels sprouts with blackberry chipotle, or their brisket-loaded fries.

Maude’s Alabama BBQ offers Southern BBQ right in Flint and even has catering if you want to share with friends and family.  You’ll find pulled pork dinners, beef brisket, St. Louis ribs, burnt ends, pulled chicken, smoked wings, and a Southern-style catfish dinner. If you need something to feed a few, they have picnic options to ensure everyone gets their fill. Maude’s also offers burgers, sliders, sandwiches, and a full complement of starters and sides.

Da Red Wagon in Flint serves up pulled pork, ribs, rib tips, catfish, Polish sausage, shrimp, catfish, tacos, and more. With traditional sides like sweet potatoes, potato salad, green beans, hush puppies, and fried okra, there’s a lot to love at Da Red Wagon.

Soggy Bottom Bar, just outside of downtown Flint, is the place for wing lovers. You select one or two pounds with one or two sauces or a dry rub. Their wings are unbreaded and marinated in their own signature brine, then fried before they are tossed in sauce or seasoning. While there you can grab an order of pulled pork nachos as well.

Scratch BBQ in Flint Township may be new to the scene, but they bring with them a deep love and appreciation of barbecue and have already made an impact in the area with their food. The smell brings in the curious and before long they are getting a seat and ordering a sandwich, pulled pork, beef brisket, St. Louis-style ribs, chicken, nachos, or even sausage links. Sides are always a big part of a good barbecue, and they offer baked beans, sweet potato casserole, mac and cheese, a variety of salads, and cornbread.

These are only a few of the many, many great barbecue options in Flint & Genesee. If one thing is clear, the search for the perfect one will be the most rewarding challenge you’ll ever accept.
