On August 10 you can be a Tourist in Your Hometown, where adventure awaits. Whether you choose to take a walking tour of the downtown district or head out on one of the MTA-provided buses for the What’s New tour, an Arts & Culture tour, a Family tour, or the History tour, you’re sure to be excited and surprised at what the area has to offer. The following are examples of what you’ll find during your tour.
What’s New
Buckham Gallery – For 40 years, Buckham Gallery has been home to independent artists and creatives. While its address has changed over the years, its mission to serve both art and artists alike has not. The gallery hosts regular art exhibitions, musicians, spoken word performers, and performance art, and has become part of the monthly art walk downtown.
Greater Flint Arts Council - Located in the heart of downtown Flint, this non-profit organization catalyzes and advocates for increased artistic and cultural enrichment in Flint’s ethnically diverse community. The GFAC is also a presenter of the arts producing annual exhibitions, concerts, festivals, and events.
Mott-Warsh Collection Gallery – The Mott-Warsh Collection Gallery is a private collection of fine art created by artists of the African diaspora and others who reflect on it. Featuring art from the Mott-Warsh collection, the gallery’s pieces are as challenging as they are revelatory. They offer regular special exhibitions as well as workshops.
Flint Farmers’ Market – The award-winning Flint Farmers’ Market is far more than just a place to buy your fruits and veggies. The space is home to many local restaurants, small businesses, and events. Tourists can stop in and get everything they need to make a great meal, from the first course through dessert and a coffee. The market is truly a hub where food and culture meet and mix.
Hilton Garden Inn – The Hilton Garden Inn has garnered recognition for its dedication to service and that is clear as soon as you enter the space. For those looking to stay in the middle of the city, guests will find comfortable lodging, and those looking for a night out will find great food at Sauce Italian American Kitch, or drinks at Simmer Rooftop Lounge.
The FIM Capitol Theatre – The FIM Capitol Theatre is the premiere space for seeing entertainment in downtown Flint. The theatre was recently restored to its full glory, featuring vaulted ceilings, and a look influenced by classic Italian architecture, and features nationally touring performers and productions regularly.
Gloria Coles Flint Public Library – Recently reimagined, this 1950s building has been transformed into a modern and flexible space. The library features beautiful architecture, spacious facilities, a podcasting studio, a meeting space, and regular programming. The library offers much more than books and continues to evolve to meet the needs of the community. The library is also home to the Greater Flint African American Sports Hall of Fame.
Flint Institute of Arts Museum + Art School – The Flint Institute of Arts Museum + Art School is one of the largest art galleries in the state. After undergoing a recent expansion, there are several galleries and exhibits to explore, as well as a large theater and special exhibitions.
Flint Children’s Museum – The Flint Children's Museum offers families the opportunity to learn and play together in a space that is accessible and exciting. With different learning exhibitions, an outdoor area, and space for parties, the museum is fun for everyone.
Mott Park Recreation Area – Located in Mott Park, the recreation area offers the public the chance for time in nature, the opportunity to play disc golf, make use of their canoe and kayak launch, or use their gathering space for parties or gatherings.
Latinx Technology & Community Center – The Latinx Technology & Community Center is a non-profit community center that offers classes, language services, and special events.
Ella Jae Essentials – Visit Ella Jae Essentials for all your bath and body needs, from scrubs to body butter, and even more.
