(FLINT, MICH - August 7). Claressa Shields, Women’s Olympic Gold Middleweight Boxer, will challenge Canadian Alison Greey, of the Windsor Amateur Boxing Club, in a bout Thursday, Aug. 8 at the Connie and Jim John Recreation Center at Kettering University in Flint, Mich. It is the first hometown bout for Shields since her Gold Medal win at the 2012 Olympics.
Shields, Chris Byrd, 1992 Silver Medalist and Andre Dirrell, 2004 Bronze Medalist, will be recognized in a boxing showcase “A Salute to Flint’s Olympic Boxing Champions.”
In addition to the main event between Shields and Greey, the showcase event will feature 10 to 12 bouts between amateur boxers from the Flint area and boxing clubs from neighboring states. The boxing will be sanctioned through the Joe Byrd Boxing Academy by USA Boxing, and all officials and boxers will be sanctioned through USA Boxing.
Box Office and doors open at 6 p.m. with matches beginning at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $40 for VIP seating and $20 general admission. Proceeds of the event to benefit the Claressa Shields Youth Foundation. Flint’s Olympians will sign autographs and there will be concessions available at the event.
The Claressa Shields Youth Foundation (CSYF) is focused on mentoring and creating positive alternatives for youth in Flint by providing activities and programs that promote clean living, encourage a commitment to education and athletics, and discourage violence. An advisory board of community and faith-based leaders oversees the foundation and develops strategies to partner with community entities for the benefit of Flint-area youth.
