(FLINT, MICHIGAN – FEBRUARY 7, 2011) Character, sportsmanship and social skills all come into play as more than 1,800 YouthQuest students take to the lanes for a day of “Strikes & Spares” on Saturday, February 12. The event will be held at Bowl Flint – B’s Bowling Center, Nightingale Lanes and Richfield Bowl – beginning at 11:00 a.m.
YouthQuest is a free after school program for K-8 students in Flint and Genesee County, managed by the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce. The program is offered at 15 schools in four school districts. All YouthQuest schools will participate in the bowling event that will take place in three shifts: 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.; 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.; and 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
The “Strikes & Spares” festival is part of the new YouthQuest Sports Program, which exposes students to a variety of sports such as basketball, indoor soccer, swimming and bowling. The program focuses on productive interaction among peers in a positive environment that allows for fun, builds skills and creates a sense of camaraderie.
The afternoon of “Strikes & Spares” will put into play the finer points of bowling, which the students have explored and practiced during their after school sessions. Importantly it will also provide lessons in character building, positive peer reinforcement and sportsmanship.
“Sports provide a great opportunity to teach kids critical skills such as dignity and respect, teambuilding and graciousness,” explains Rhetta Hunyady, Vice President, Operations and Employer Education & Training Connection at the Regional Chamber. “Our students will have fun and learn in a positive, no-pressure environment.”
“Strikes & Spares” is only open to YouthQuest students. B’s Bowling Center is located at 750 S Center Rd., in Flint; Nightingale Lanes is located 4403 Davison Rd., in Burton; and Richfield Bowl is located 5340 Richfield Rd., Flint.
